WEED BIOCONTROL IN THE COOK ISLANDS
In November 2013, a significant weed biocontrol project was launched in the Cook Islands to address the increasing threat of invasive weeds. Supported by funding from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), this project aimed to protect the unique ecosystems and agricultural landscapes of the islands.
To date, seven biocontrol agents have been introduced, targeting six key invasive weed species. The project’s success has made it a model for other Pacific nations, showcasing the effectiveness of targeted biocontrol in protecting native biodiversity.
