Waiata

In Māori tradition it is custom to support formal speeches with a song (waiata). During the symposium you will have the opportunity to learn two simple waiata, and sing them at the end of the symposium, following the closing speech by our hosts form the local tribe. Wether you can sing well or not, that doesn’t matter – in Māori tradition it is the taking part that counts.

We will practice them for 10 minutes every day during the symposium. Fear not, we do not expect you to learn the hand moves, but you are welcome to step up to the challenge!

Te Aroha

Te aroha
Te whakapono
Me te rangimārie
Tātou tātou e
Love
Hope
And peace
For us all

Tūtira mai ngā iwi

Tūtiramai ngā iwi
Tātou tātou e
Tūtira mai ngā iwi
Tātou tātou e
Whai-a te marama-tanga
me te aroha – e ngā iwi!
Ki-a tapa-tahi
Ki-a kotahi rā.
Tātou tātou e.
Tā – tou, tā – tou E!!
Hi aue hei!!!
Stand together, people
All of us, all of us.
Stand in rows, people
All of us, all of us.
Seek after knowledge
and love of others – everybody!
Be really virtuous
And stay united.
All of us, all of us.
All of us, all of us.
